Here are some things to consider in terms of your style and inclinations when selecting your flatware pattern: do you like uncomplicated silverware lines or a more elaborate pattern? Do you like soft curves or more distinct edges on your flat ware? Do you like flat ware or silverwear that feels heavier or very light? Is the flat ware dishwasher safe? Does your formal flat ware require polishing or other special maintenance?

Flatware sets, silverware, stainless steel, silver all refer to hand utensils used in preparing, serving and especially eating food. The knife, fork and spoon are the major items of flat ware in the western world, and traditionally good quality items were made of silver, though steel was always used for more utilitarian knives, and pewter was used for some cheap items, especially spoons.

Stainless flat ware is commonly 18/8 or 18/10 stainless steel. The best brands are made from steel containing both chromium and nickel.

How To Use Silverwear

The conventions that detail how silverware must be used have developed together with the forms of the utensils themselves. Both sterling and stainless flat ware are held horizontally by balancing them between the first knuckle of the middle finger and the index finger while the thumb steadies the handle. Silverware must always be placed on the plate during pauses between bites. The diner signals that he or she is finished eating by setting the silverwear parallel to each other across the center of the plate.

Silverplated and sterling silver flat ware have been a major addition to the home for generations. Most fancy flat ware is given as a gift or passed down in the family as heirlooms. Inexpensive flatware can be purchased at a local store or online at a discount price.
